Welcome Home
KITH Family Subsidy Program

KITH has launched a new family rent program called “Welcome Home”. The goal of Welcome Home is to expand housing opportunities outside the limitations of KITH-owned units through donations from Foundations, service groups, families, churches, workplace groups, and businesses. Each $15,000 donation (or combined donations) provides a one-year partial rent subsidy in regular rental housing for a local needy family. Plus, it provides for the case management support and other services that are so crucial to transitioning families into self-sufficiency. Each family stabilized by Welcome Home strengthens the community as a whole.

Low-income housing is scarce, shelters and similar multi-family facilities are already cramped. According to the King County 2008 Communities Count document, only 11% of the rental housing on the Eastside is affordable to those at 50% of median income or less. Many become homeless simply because they cannot afford the rent. We are very excited by this new program because removes the limits of space and expands our ability to serve even more homeless families. This new program provides an innovative approach to homelessness by increasing the number of housing units available to homeless families by utilizing market rate housing. Through “Welcome Home”, KITH will assist a homeless family to find an apartment, provide a rent subsidy for the apartment and place services around the family so they can be successful. Services include case management, access to education and job training, parenting classes, and household budgeting. These are critical in helping families improve life skills, as well as increase income in order to become self-sufficient and take over paying the full rent at the end of the program period.

Our “Welcome Home” families, with the help of the KITH case manager, will find their own apartments. This gives families some choice in where they wish to live, which may be close to school and/or work. The family contribution toward monthly rent is determined by current income. The expectation is that each family will increase income in order to be able to pay the entire rent at the end of the program period.
