Welcome HomeThe goal of Welcome Home is to expand housing opportunities outside the limitations of KITH-owned units through donations from foundations, service groups, families, churches, workplace groups and businesses. Each $15,000 donation (or combined donations) provides a local family with a one-year partial rent subsidy in regular rental housing. It also funds case management support, access to education and job training, parenting classes, training in household budgeting, and other services that are crucial to helping families become self-sufficient. We are very excited about this new program because it means that we can serve more families, even when we’re out of space in our own housing units. Low-income housing is scarce; shelters and similar multi-family facilities are cramped. According to King County’s 2008 Communities Count, only 11% of rental housing on the Eastside is affordable to those at or below 50% of median income. Many members of our community become homeless simply because they cannot afford this level of rent. Our Welcome Home families, with the help of KITH’s case manager, find their own apartments. This gives them some choice in where they wish to live, which may be close to school and/or work. Each family’s contribution toward monthly rent is determined by their current income. Participating families take over paying the full rent amount at the end of the program period.
